A gulch is a narrow, deep little valley. Water cut it long ago, but the bed is usually dry now, except after heavy rain. You hear the word most in the American West — gold-rush stories, cowboy films, place names like Dry Gulch. It is a landscape word, not a city word. Though actually, it looks and sounds a bit like gully, and often treat them as twins. A gully is also a channel cut by water, but gulch feels steeper, rockier, and more American. Scholars think the two words are probably not related, even though they sit so close in the mouth.

組成From earlier gulsh (sink in, gush out), from Middle English gulchen (to gulp, spew), probably from the same source as gulp. Likely not related to gully, despite the similar shape and meaning.
