A guise is the way someone or something looks on the outside, when that look hides what is really going on, or when it will not last. We often say under the guise of: someone uses a kind face, a good cause, or an official title as a cover. It is a slightly word. In easy talk people might say cover, front, or disguise. Though actually, disguise is this same word with a little piece stuck on the front: a disguise is a guise you put on. The older meaning was simply manner or way — how you go about something — and only later did the hiding-the-truth feeling grow strong.
