A guinea was a British gold coin. People used it for a long time, but you cannot spend one in a shop today. It was worth one pound and one shilling — a little more than one pound, or £1.05 if you write it the modern way. Though actually, the word is not dead. At horse , and when people buy and sell , the price is still often given in guineas, not in pounds. It makes the deal sound old and grand, like a club with its own way of talking. The name comes from Guinea in West Africa: the first coins were made from gold that came from that coast, mostly from the place we now call Ghana. So this is a money word named after a coast, not a country you visit with a guinea in your pocket, and not a small animal.
