A guillemot is a sea bird, black and white, with a straight, narrow beak. It lives on northern coasts and cliffs, not in Taiwan's waters, so you will meet the word in nature films, bird books, and travel writing about cold seas. Guillemots stand quite upright on rock ledges, packed close together, and they swim well; they hunt fish. Though actually, English uses one everyday name for more than one close bird — the common guillemot and the black guillemot are not the same animal, and related birds like the razorbill sit nearby in the same family. Learners do not need all those splits at first: picture a penguin-shaped sea bird that is not a penguin, with a thin bill, living on northern cliffs. The name is a specialist word, not a metaphor, and people do not stretch it.
