The guilder was the money of the Netherlands before that country moved to the euro. You paid in guilders in shops, and prices in old Dutch books and family stories are in guilders. The name comes from a Dutch word meaning golden — the old coin was thought of as a gold piece. The Netherlands switched to the euro in 2002, so you will not spend guilders on a trip today; you meet the word in history, in museums, and when older people talk about prices from their youth. Though actually a few other countries also called their money a guilder, but in English, without another country named, people usually mean the Dutch one.
