Guernsey is an island in the English Channel, close to the northwest coast of France. It is one of the Channel Islands; Jersey is the other famous one nearby. People go there on holiday, and it is also known as a place where some companies and rich people pay very little tax. Though actually Guernsey is not simply “part of the United Kingdom” in the ordinary sense: it is a Crown Dependency, with its own laws, and that special status is part of why the tax story exists. The same name is also used for a kind of cow from the island, and for a thick knitted shirt that fishermen wore; those came from the place, not the other way round.
組成From Anglo-Norman, from Old Norse: Grani (a man’s name, “Grani’s”) + ey (“island”). People sometimes say it means “green island”; that is a folk story, not the real origin.
