Guatemala is a country in Central America. The Pacific Ocean is on one side; the Caribbean Sea, which belongs to the Atlantic, is on the other. Mexico sits to the north, and , Honduras, and El Salvador are neighbours too. The capital is Guatemala City — same name as the country, which can feel confusing at first. Spanish is the main official language now, though actually many Maya languages are still spoken in towns and in the hills. The Maya people lived here for many centuries, and you can still walk among their old cities, temples, and stone work. It is a mountainous land with volcanoes, and coffee is one of the things the country is known for. Older books may say about fourteen million people lived there in 2014; more people live there now. In English the name is said roughly gwa-te-MAH-la.
組成Borrowed from Spanish Guatemala, first used for Iximche, where the first capital stood. Spanish took it from Classical Nahuatl Cuauhtēmallān: cuauhtēmalli (“woodpile”) + -tlān (“place”).
