Guam is an island in the western Pacific, east of the Philippines. It belongs to the United States, but it is not a state — it is a US territory. The capital is ña; you will also see åtña, which is the same place in the Chamorro spelling people use locally. Older figures put the population around 160,000 from 2014. In the region it is known as a place where the US keeps soldiers and ships, and as a stop in the Pacific; for many it is a short holiday flight. The people native to Guam are the Chamorro. The English name came through Spanish from Chamorro Guåhan, said to mean a place that has or a place of resources.
