Gstaad is a small town high in the mountains of Switzerland. People do not go because it is big — it is not. They go to ski, and because it has become a winter holiday place for very rich and fashionable people. You hear the name in talk about film stars, old money, and expensive hotels. A room there can cost more than many families spend in a year. Students sometimes picture a city; think of a pretty mountain village that learned to serve the very rich. The name is Swiss German. English speakers often swallow the first sound and say something like shtaad; locally it keeps a tight gs- at the front.
