    Grozny is a city in the south-east of Russia. It is the capital of , a region in the mountains between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, and it stands on the Sunzha River. The name is Russian. It means 'fierce' or 'severe' — the same word Russians use in the name of the old English books call Ivan the Terrible. In English we keep Grozny as a name; we do not turn it into 'Fierce Town'. The city was badly broken in war in the 1990s and later built again. You will see it in news and in history, not in everyday talk.
