Think of a child whose body is getting taller faster than it can settle into. At night the arms and legs , and yet nothing is broken and nothing is ill: the simply comes with growing. English keeps that picture and lends it out. Whenever something is getting bigger fast and hurting a little on the way, the trouble can be called its growing pains, with the quiet promise that it will pass.
