A groundsman is a man whose job is to look after a large outdoor place — a sports field, a park, or the gardens around a school or big house. He cuts the grass, keeps the ground even, paints the white lines, and makes the place ready for people to play or walk. This is mainly British English. In American English people more often say groundskeeper, and that word can be a man or a woman. Though actually, the job can be skilled, not just “cutting grass”: on a cricket field, how the groundsman prepares the ground can change the whole match. You would not use this word for a security guard, or for someone who only waters house plants.
