    Groovy means fashionable, modern, and fun — “this is good, and it feels of-the-moment.” It belongs especially to the 1960s, and a little to the years around them. A groovy shirt, a groovy party, a groovy idea. It is a cheer-word, informal, and not for a school essay. Though actually, if you use it straight-faced today, many people hear a joke or a time-machine. It sounds like a film about that decade, or like a parent teasing. It is not wrong; it is dated. Younger speakers use it to quote that time, or to play. In music talk it can still be more serious: a groovy bass line is one that sits in a fat, danceable rhythm. The picture underneath is a record. From groove + -y, from the phrase in the groove, first about the grooves on an early record player: when the needle was in the groove, the music ran true. Musicians kept the feeling; everyday English turned it into a general “this is great.”
