Grist is something you can use in a particular situation — material that helps you do the job in front of you. You will almost always meet it in the old mill picture: grist for the mill, or grist to the mill. Whatever grain arrived could be ground; so whatever facts, gossip, or trouble arrive can be turned into something useful, a story, an argument, a plan. People say it of journalists, lawyers, and anyone who can make use of messy stuff. The noun is old: Middle English grist, from Old English grist, gyrst, “grinding, or corn brought to be ground.” The deeper origin is unclear; scholars do not agree, and some look toward a very old “crunch / grind” root. The mill sense is the one that still lives. You do not call any useful thing “grist” by itself in casual speech; you use the mill phrase.
