A grilling is when someone asks you a lot of questions, hard and fast, and you cannot easily step aside. It feels like standing too close to a hot grill: the heat does not stop. Journalists grill politicians; parents grill teenagers who came home late; a boss may give a worker a grilling after a mistake. The word is informal. It is not torture, and it is not a friendly chat — it sits in the middle: pressure with words. You can say a grilling (the event) or they have been grilling him (the action). Though actually, grilling is also what you do to food on a grill, so the same spelling has a kitchen life. In this sense, no food is involved. The picture was borrowed from that heat.
