A griffin is an imaginary animal from old stories: it has the body of a lion, and the head and wings of an eagle. People long ago pictured it as strong and proud, a guard of treasure and holy places. You will see it on old buildings, drawn on family shields, and used in fantasy books and games. It is not a real animal, and it is not a dragon — a dragon is more like a giant lizard, often with fire. In English you may also meet the spelling gryphon; that is the same creature, not a different one. Some people have Griffin as a last name. That is just a name. It does not mean the person is a bird-lion.
