    Grieved means very sad and upset, usually after a loss. It is the past of grieve, and also an adjective: she was deeply grieved. With it, something can grieve you: It grieved her to leave. This is rather formal and a little old-fashioned in everyday talk; younger people more often say sad, hurt, or . You still meet it in news, letters, and stories. Though actually, in legal English the grieved party can mean the person who was wronged — that is the older sense of grieve as harm, still hiding in the paperwork. Do not mix it up with grievance, which is the complaint itself.
