A greengage is a kind of plum. The skin is green to yellow-green, and the inside is sweet and juicy, often sweeter than a dark purple plum. People eat them fresh or cook them into jam. The name looks like green plus another English word gage meaning plum, and the fruit is green — but that is the tidy surface story, and it is the wrong way round. The word gage as a plum name was cut out of greengage later, not the other way around. The story tell is that Sir William Gage in England received plums from France, the labels were lost, and the fruit was called after him. That is the origin people who study the word accept, with the usual caution that old garden stories get tidier in the telling. In Taiwan, do not map this onto 青梅: that is a different fruit, sour, and used in drinks and 梅子. A greengage is a Western plum.
