Greed is a strong wish for more — more food, more money, more power, more things — than you need or than is fair. It is not a calm, neutral word. If you say someone has greed, you are judging them. Wanting a decent wage is not automatically greed; taking far more while others go without is when people reach for this word. It can be about food, eating past fullness, or about money and power. In old Christian teaching it is one of the seven deadly sins, so it still carries a moral weight even when people are not talking about religion. There is a verb “to greed”, from the same history, but almost nobody uses it now; we say “to be greedy” instead. The noun arrived around 1600, cut back from the older adjective greedy — so English had a word for the greedy person before it had this name for the feeling.
