Grandad is a warm, everyday word for grandfather. It is especially British. You will also see , with two d’s; both are used, and they mean the same. Children say “my grandad” or call the man Grandad as a name, the way they call their father Dad. It feels close and informal, not like a form or a legal paper. The first half is the same grand- you find in grandmother and grandfather: it marks “one generation up”, not “very big”. The second half is dad. American families more often say grandpa.
阿公、爺爺(英國口語)。美國比較常說 grandpa;台灣常說阿公。
組成grand- (“one generation up”, as in grandfather) + dad.
