A long piece of clothing, usually reaching the floor. It can mean a fancy dress for a special event — a wedding gown, an evening gown. It can also mean the long loose garment a judge, a graduating student, or a university professor wears over their clothes. And in a hospital, the thin garment a patient or doctor wears is also called a gown.
