Governance is the act or process of governing — the way a place, a country, a company, or even a school is run: who decides, how they decide, and whether they are watched. It is not the same as “the government.” The government is the group of people (or the system of offices) in charge of a country. Governance is the running itself, the how. Though actually, you will hear it far outside : corporate governance is how a company is steered and checked; a university can talk about its governance; people even speak of internet governance. It is a formal, slightly cold word — the kind you find in reports, not in a chat about “who’s the boss.” If someone says “poor governance,” they mean the running is weak, unfair, or messy, not only that they dislike the party in power.

From Middle English governaunce, from Old French gouvernance; govern + -ance.
源自古法文 gouvernance，就是 govern 加上 -ance。
組成govern + -ance. Govern is “to run or be in charge of.” -ance turns that into the act or state of doing it.
