A gourd is a round fruit with a hard skin. When it is ripe and dried, people clean out the inside and use the shell as a bottle, a bowl, a ladle, or even a musical instrument. The plant sits with and melons. Fresh young gourds can be cooked as a vegetable, but the picture in most English use is the dried shell, or the container made from it. People also say someone is “out of their gourd,” meaning acting crazy — that is slang, a stretch from this word, not a second kind of fruit.
