The Goths were an East Germanic people who pressed on the Roman Empire between the 3rd and 5th centuries. School books often say they came from central Europe, “in what is now Germany.” That is tidy, though actually their story is messier: they are first clearly seen near the Black Sea, they split into groups we now call Visigoths and Ostrogoths, they moved a long way, and in 410 the Visigoths even sacked Rome. They were not cartoon “barbarians with no culture”: they had kings, laws, and a written form of their language (Gothic — we still have a Bible in it). Later ages used Gothic as a slightly rude word for “not classical,” and that is how we got Gothic churches and, much later, goth music — but those are other stories. This word, with a capital G, means the people.
組成The people-name comes from Ancient Greek Γότθοι (Gótthoi, “Goths”), proposed to derive from unattested Gothic *guta.
