When someone does something gormlessly, they do it as if their head is empty. They may stand there, stare, miss what is going on, or move as if they have no plan at all. It is not “stupid” in a sharp, nasty way; it is vacant — no spark, no clue. People in Britain, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand use it; Americans almost never do. It is informal, and it can sting, though people also say it with a laugh about a friend who is being slow. You will hear the adjective gormless more often; this -ly form tells you how they look or act. Older speakers still use it a lot, but it is not dead.
