A special waterproof material, usually a thin layer inside cloth, used for winter and sport clothes. Rain stays out, but sweat can still get through, so you stay drier in wet weather and do not boil inside a heavy jacket. You meet it on coats, trousers, boots and gloves for mountains and outdoor sport. It is a brand name, named after the American inventor Robert W. Gore, with Tex from textile, meaning cloth. Though actually, shops sometimes say Gore-Tex for any similar waterproof-but-breathing cloth; strictly, only the company's own material is Gore-Tex. Keep the capital letters and the hyphen.
