The Gorbals is a district of Glasgow, in Scotland, just south of the river. For much of the twentieth century, English speakers used the name as a picture of a British slum: packed old tenement houses in bad condition, poverty, and a reputation for crime and fighting. It was often named among the worst such areas in the UK. Though actually, that is the old story. From the 1960s on, and again towards the end of the century, much of it was pulled down and rebuilt, so the Gorbals of today is not the Gorbals of the old photos. People still say the Gorbals, with the. It is a place name, always a capital G — not a common word for any poor street.
