A gonad is the organ that makes sex cells: sperm in a male, eggs in a female. In humans the male gonads are the (the two in the scrotum) and the female gonads are the ovaries (inside the lower belly). Biology and medicine use this calm, technical word as a cover for both; ordinary talk uses and ovaries, and rude talk has other words. Though actually, in loose speech some people say gonads when they only mean the male ones, as in a kick in the gonads — that is a stretch, not the textbook meaning. Many kinds of animal have gonads; the word is not for plants. You will meet gonadal in science for “about the gonads,” and hormones such as testosterone and estrogen come from them.
