Golgotha is the old name for the place just outside Jerusalem where, in the New Testament, Jesus was crucified — nailed to a wooden cross and left to die. The name came into English from Greek, and before that from ; it is usually explained as the place of the skull, perhaps because the hill looked like a skull, or because skulls were there. The Romans, and later much of Western church language, also called the same place Calvary, from a Latin word for skull. So Golgotha and Calvary are two names for one place, not two hills. You will meet Golgotha in the Bible, in church, and in art. It is not a street word. When writers use it outside church, they sometimes mean a place of terrible pain, but that stretch is literary and uncommon in speech. It is a proper name, so it keeps a capital G.
