    A goldfield is a stretch of land where people can find gold in the ground. In the nineteenth century, when news of gold spread, thousands of people rushed to goldfields in places like Australia, California, and South Africa. The word is a simple join of two clear pieces, used in history and geography. A gold mine is usually the mine itself, the hole and the works; a goldfield is the wider area. Though actually, some towns are also named Goldfield because gold was found there — the place name comes from this same word.
