When a feeling is gnawing, it does not hit you once and then stop. It stays, and it works on you the way a mouse works on wood. A gnawing pain is a dull that keeps coming back. A gnawing hunger sits in the stomach for hours. A gnawing doubt is a small “what if” you cannot shake off. This is the adjective (it has the same shape as the -ing verb), and it is a little more written than spoken, though you will hear it. It almost always talks about something unpleasant — you would not normally call joy gnawing.
