Glyndebourne is an old country house in East Sussex, in the south of England. The house itself goes back to the 1500s, but people say the name today because of the opera festival held there every summer. There is a real opera house in the gardens, and for weeks each year singers put on full operas — not a concert with a few songs, but the whole story, with orchestra and costumes. The classic picture is this: people in evening clothes, a long picnic on the lawn before the show, then they go inside for the music. That picture is a bit tidy. Yes, tickets cost a lot, and the place has a strong ‘rich, upper-class day out’ feeling. Though actually, many of the people who care most are opera lovers, music students, and regulars who save up — not only the very rich. Still, if someone in Britain says a thing is ‘very Glyndebourne’, they mean it feels posh, formal, and a little proud of itself. It is a place name, not a kind of music and not a person’s name.
