Gluttony is the bad habit of eating and drinking far too much, as if you cannot stop, and as if the wanting has become the point. In church language it is one of the old “deadly sins” — not a joke word there, but a moral failing. In ordinary talk it is still disapproving, though people also use it a bit lightly, about a huge meal or a second pudding. It names the habit or the vice, not a single hungry afternoon. A person who lives that way is a glutton. Though actually, it is about excess, not about enjoying food. A person can love cooking, or eat with real pleasure, and still not be guilty of gluttony.
