Glottal means ‘of the ’ — and the is that small space between your vocal cords, in the throat, which the air from your lungs must pass through to make voice. When that space opens and closes, the movement itself can make a sound. The one hear about most is the glottal stop: a little catch, as in the middle of uh-oh, or in some British voices in bottle (bo’le), where t is replaced by that catch. Linguists use glottal for sounds made at that spot; ordinary people say ‘a catch in the throat’. It is a classroom and word, not a café word. Though actually, the space has its own name (); glottal is the describing word, and sometimes shorthand for a glottal sound.
