A glockenspiel is a music instrument: a row of flat metal bars, short and long, that you strike with small special hammers. Short bars make high notes; long bars make lower ones. The sound is bright and bell-like — clear and ringing, not the softer knock of a xylophone’s wooden bars. You hear it in school bands, orchestras, and a lot of Christmas music. English borrowed the whole German word and kept it. Though actually, it looks a little like a tiny metal xylophone, which is why people mix the two up: same idea of hitting bars, different material, different ring.
