Glittering describes something sparkling with small flashes of light, like glittering jewelry or the glittering lights of a city at night. It's also used to describe something very impressive, successful, or glamorous, even without any real light involved - a 'glittering career' means a very successful, admired one, and a 'glittering occasion' is a grand, impressive event. Many English words about light happen to start with the sound 'gl-': glow, gleam, glimmer, glisten, glitter.
