The glitterati are the rich, famous, fashionable people — the ones at film festivals, designer parties, and magazine covers. It is a slightly joking magazine word, not a kind name you say to someone's face. It blends glitter (shine, wealth) with literati (the in-crowd), so it paints famous people as a sparkling set. You almost always say the glitterati, as a group. Informal, a bit knowing, more at home in newspapers than in school books.
