A glimmering is a tiny, faint sign that a thought or feeling is there — not the whole thing, only a little light of it. You might catch a glimmering of hope on someone's face, or a glimmering of an idea at the back of your mind. The picture behind the word is a weak light that almost is not there. In everyday talk people more often say a glimmer of hope; glimmering as a noun for a sign of feeling sounds a little older and more like writing than like chat. You may also meet glimmering as a describing word for a faint light, but this sense is the small inner sign.
