Glaucoma is an eye disease. Pressure inside the eye gets too high and slowly hurts the nerve that carries what you see to the brain. Sight little by little, often from the edges first, and people may not notice until a lot is already gone — it can steal sight quietly. If it is not treated, it can lead to blindness. There is a slow, common kind, and a sudden, very painful kind that is an emergency. Drops, laser treatment, or an operation can lower the pressure; they cannot always put lost sight back. It is a doctor’s word, not slang. Older people are more at risk, and it can run in families, so eye checks matter. Though actually, the old Greek name was about a blue-green cloudiness in the eye; doctors now use glaucoma for this pressure problem, which is not the same as a cloudy lens.
組成Borrowed from Ancient Greek γλαύκωμα (glaúkōma, “an opacity of the crystalline lens”), from γλαυκός (glaukós, “blue-green”).
