A gland is a small organ in the body that makes a substance the body needs and then sends it out. Sweat glands in the skin make sweat. Glands in the mouth make , the water that helps you swallow. Other glands make hormones, the chemical messages that travel in the blood and tell the body what to do. You usually cannot see a gland from the outside, though a doctor may feel one in the neck when it is swollen. In school and in clinics this is the normal meaning, and it is a fairly formal, science-y word — at home people more often name the stuff (sweat, spit) than the gland itself. Though actually, mechanics also use gland for a tight seal on a pipe or machine; that is a different history, from an old word for a clamp, not from the body. In this lesson we mean the body part.
組成Borrowed in the late 1600s from French glande, from older French glandre, from Latin glandulae (throat glands, tonsils), the plural of glandula, “a little acorn,” from glāns, “acorn,” + -ula (a small one). The body part was named after a small acorn shape.
