Giza is a city in Egypt, just west of the Nile, next to Cairo. In ancient times this place mattered a great deal: the Great and the Great Sphinx stand in the desert near Giza, built as tombs and a stone guardian for old Egyptian kings. People still go there to see those huge stones. In Arabic the name is often heard with Al- (al-Gīza). English usually says Giza. It is a place name, so we write it with a capital letter.

組成From Egyptian Arabic اَلْجِيزَة (il-Gīza). Where the name first came from is not settled. The old writer al-Maqrizi linked it to a Syriac word for “side.” Other scholars have suggested Persian dez (“castle”), or an ancient Egyptian phrase meaning something like “on the side of the high one” (the pyramid). None of these is certain.
