Gingham is a light cotton cloth with a pattern of small, even squares — usually white plus one other colour, like blue, red, or pink. The squares are the same size both ways, so it looks neat and simple, not like the bigger, mixed-colour checks you see on a . People use it for summer shirts, school-style dresses, , and picnic cloths; it feels casual and a bit old-fashioned in a friendly way. You can say “a gingham shirt” or “gingham checks.” Though actually, shops sometimes put the word on any small check, even when the cloth is not cotton.
