Gingery hair or fur is a bright orange-brown, the colour of the spice ginger when you break the root — not deep red, not yellow, but that warm in-between. We say it of people (gingery hair, a gingery beard) and of animals (a gingery cat). It is a colour word here, built from ginger + -y (“like ginger”). In other sentences gingery can also mean “tasting or smelling of ginger,” but this entry is the hair-and-fur colour. Informal to neutral; a bit more than saying “orange-brown.”
