Something gilded has a thin layer of gold covering its outside — the object underneath is usually not real gold at all. You might see a gilded frame around a mirror, or a gilded statue. People also use 'gilded' about something that looks rich and beautiful on the outside but is hiding problems underneath — like 'a gilded life' that looks perfect in photos but isn't really happy.
