A gibbon is a small ape that lives in the trees of South and Southeast Asia. It has very long arms, no tail, and it swings from branch to branch with those arms, almost like flying through the forest. People loosely call it a monkey; though actually it is an ape, in the same broad family as and us — apes do not have tails the way most monkeys do. Gibbons are famous for loud calling, often in pairs. You may see them in a zoo; in the wild they stay high in the trees. Gibbon is also an English family name, but that name has a different history; it is not from the animal.

組成The animal name is a reborrowing from French gibbon. That French word is a folk reshaping of a name from a Northern Aslian language of the Malay Peninsula (compare Batek kəboɲ). It is not from the English family name Gibbon, even though the spellings match: that name comes from Old French Giboin, from Frankish *Gebawin, literally “gift-friend.”
