A giantess is a woman giant in children’s stories: extremely tall and strong, often bigger than a house, and often the bad one. She may catch people, keep them, or eat them, the way a story giant does. The word is simply giant with an old ending that marks a female. You meet her in fairy tales, picture books, and some games. Though actually, English has been dropping -ess on many job words — people often just say actor now — but giantess has stayed, because it names a story creature, not a job. People sometimes use it, with a smile or a sting, for a very tall woman in real life; that is a stretch, and it can sound unkind.
