A GI is a soldier in the United States Army, especially an ordinary soldier rather than an officer, and the word is tied most strongly to the Second World War. People still use it for US soldiers in later wars, but the classic picture is the American in a helmet and khaki in the 1940s. It is informal: films and newspapers say GIs; the army itself more often says soldier. You write it in capitals and say the two letters (jee-eye). The usual story is that GI comes from “Government Issue,” a stamp on the kit the army handed out, which then became a nickname for the men who wore it. Though actually, the letters first showed up on military supplies with other readings as well (including older paperwork that tied G.I. to iron), and only later settled on the soldier. It names a person, not a machine. G.I. Joe later became both a nickname and a toy.
組成Usually explained as the initials of Government Issue, once stamped on US Army gear; the name then stuck to the soldiers themselves. The letters were used on supplies before they meant “soldier,” and older military use of G.I. was not only “Government Issue.”
