GHQ stands for General Headquarters. It is the place from which a large military operation is run — the offices, maps, and senior officers who give orders, not the soldiers at the front. You meet it in war histories, especially of the World Wars and the mid-twentieth century. It is an official abbreviation, written in capital letters, and said as three letters: G-H-Q, not as one word. In some countries it can also mean the main headquarters of the armed forces in . It is not a shop, not a company brand, and not a word for ordinary school life. In Taiwan, older history writing also uses GHQ for the Allied headquarters that ran Japan after the Second World War.
