A gherkin is a small that has been kept in vinegar to make a pickle. It is usually , sour, and eaten cold — on a burger, in a sandwich, or on the side of a plate. In British English, gherkin is the ordinary word for that small pickled . In American English, people more often just say pickle for any in vinegar; they may still say gherkin when they mean the small bumpy kind, not a big dill pickle. 組成From an old Dutch form gurk, a variant of augurk (“small pickled cucumber”), from Low German / Middle Low German agurke, augurke, probably through a Slavic language (Polish has ogórek, “cucumber”), and further back from Byzantine Greek ἀγγούριον (angoúrion, “cucumber”). The English shape gherkin may be from a Dutch diminutive gurkijn, or more likely from the Dutch plural gurken, which English then heard as if it ended in the little-word ending -kin. German Gurke is the same family.
