The Ghats are two long lines of mountains in the south of India. The Western Ghats run down the west side, along the Arabian Sea: they are greener, wetter, and more like one long wall of hills. The Eastern Ghats run down the east side, along the Bay of Bengal: they are more broken up, not one smooth chain. English almost always says the Western Ghats and the Eastern Ghats, with the, like a place name, and we give Ghats a capital letter. You would not call one hill “a ghat” in this mountain sense. Though actually, the same Hindi word was also borrowed for something else: the stone steps that go down to a river, like the famous ones at Varanasi. So English “ghats” can mean river steps as well.
